Not every romantic weekend away needs to include beachside cocktails, sunset cruises and clifftop accommodation with ocean views…These things can certainly help—but the main objectives are to slow down, connect with your partner, enjoy shared experiences and indulge in good conversation. There are many beautiful parts of Australia where you can do this, but there is just a special something about the Orange region that exudes romance and tranquility. Located just a 3.5-hour drive from Sydney, Orange is home to some of the country’s finest wining and dining and the most beautiful countryside. Plus, it’s just remote enough to make you feel like you’ve been transported to another world.

If you’re planning to whisk your significant other away for a romantic weekend in Orange, we’ve put together the perfect couples itinerary that carries a balance of fun, exploration and utter relaxation.

A quiet Friday night in

Chances are you’ll arrive in Orange on Friday afternoon or evening, so we recommend heading straight to your accommodation for a quiet night in. Take note: your accommodation choice is crucial. It can make or break your weekend—so make sure you choose wisely! The winning formula combines beauty and serenity while catering specifically to couples... And that’s where we come in! Because Lakeview Luxury Couples Retreat has been purpose-built for couples, you’ll enjoy all the small pleasures that come with this type of specialised lodging. Spend your first evening watching the sunset over Lake Canobolas as you indulge in a complimentary hamper filled with local produce. There are no children allowed at Lakeview Retreat, so all you’ll hear are the blissful sounds of the native birds and wildlife that surround the luxury villas. Climb into your luxurious king-sized bed for an early night before exploring your surrounds the following day.

Saturdays are for exploring

Starting the day at Lakeview Retreat is an experience in itself. Enjoy a piping hot cup of coffee from bed or from the veranda as you look over the lake and surrounding countryside. For breakfast, either try one of the many amazing cafes located just a short drive away in Orange, or take a picnic to the Orange Botanic Gardens and eat among the colourful displays of native and exotic trees and plants. Afterwards, drive to one of the many beautiful local orchards to pick your own fruit to take home. We have cherries, apples and a great selection of stone fruits—some of the best produce in Australia is grown in Orange! And no trip here would be complete without visiting one of our famous wineries, so why not book yourselves in for a long lunch at Heifer Station or Philip Shaw wines? Both offer incredible menus showcasing fresh local produce and delicious wine to suit all tastes.

A Sunday in the great outdoors

On your final morning, get up early and brave the stairs at Pinnacle lookout to watch the sunrise over the Towac Valley. You could even take your coffee or breakfast to enjoy while you soak in the views. Afterwards, we recommend the ten-minute drive to the main reserve at Lake Canobolas. The lake offers plenty of activities and your choice may depend on the season. There’s fishing, kayaking or swimming if you’re game—otherwise a walk or cycle around the lake is a great way to explore. And when you return to Lakeview retreat, don’t check out before visiting our growing herd of Highland Cattle. They’re not a common sight in Australia and are one of our most popular attractions; always up for a photo opportunity with our lovely Lakeview guests.
