Easter is the perfect time to sneak away for a lovely long weekend in Orange.

You’ll have a whole four days to explore, relax, spend quality time with your special people and do as much or as little as you like. Whether you have children who are chasing the Easter bunny or a partner who is desperate for a quiet weekend away from the city, here are our top five things to do in and around Orange over the Easter break.

1. See the Sculptures by the Bush in Blayney

Every year over the April school holidays, a fun collection of sculptures pops up in and around the small town of Blayney —just a 35-minute drive from Orange. If you’re travelling with children, they’ll adore spending a fun few hours sculpture-spotting, keeping a keen eye out for hay bale art, farm art and scarecrows. Cash prizes are available for the top three sculptures in each category and there’s also a People’s Choice award—so remember to place your vote! Votes can be placed on the Sculptures by the Bush Facebook page and there’s a digital map available on the Blayney Shire Council website to help you make your way around. They can be spotted any time from the 6th to the 30th of April.

2. Pick your own fruit at Hillside Harvest

Cherry season may be done and dusted, but thanks to Orange’s incredibly productive soils, elevation and climate, there are still fun fruit-picking experiences to be found! Popular orchard Hillside Harvest will have juicy, ripe apples and figs in season from March to May. You’ll pay a small entry fee for your fruit picking experience, then everything you pick will be weighed and paid for before you depart. You’re welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy under the shady trees, or to purchase food and drinks at the on-site café. Hillside Harvest is super accessible, just a 15-minute drive from our Orange luxury accommodation.

3. Take a day trip

If you’ve got the whole four-day Easter weekend to spare, you might choose to take a day trip from Orange to one of the nearby towns or attractions. Within a couple of hours’ drive from our luxury accommodation, you’ll find the cities of Parkes and Dubbo, with the latter home to the amazing Taronga Western Plains Zoo . If you prefer to explore some of the nearby historical villages, put Canowindra and Millthorpe at the top of your list. The Laurence Edwards Sculpture Exhibition , A Gathering of Uncertainties, comes to the Orange Regional Gallery from February until April—so Easter may just be your last chance to see it. If you haven’t heard of UK sculptor Laurence Edwards, he’s known for his bronze statues that evoke emotion and connection between people and the landscape. His Gathering of Uncertainties exhibition in Orange will be the first time it’s displayed this comprehensively anywhere in Australia.

Spend the morning on Lake Canobolas

Yes, that’s ‘on’ Lake Canobolas, not ‘at’! We highly recommend starting off your weekend with a peaceful paddle across the lake. You can hire kayaks from the lakeside and spend a couple of hours exploring the tranquil surrounds and spotting the local flora and fauna. There’s an array of birdlife and waterfowl - and you might even spot a platypus if you’re lucky! Around the lakeside there are often echidnas and wallabies nearby, going about their daily business. The lake is just a ten-minute drive from town or from our luxury Orange accommodation… What a way to start a weekend!

Pick berries at Huntley Berry Farm

A summer holiday is not complete without unlimited fresh fruit at your disposal, so head to Huntley Berry Farm to stock up for the weekend (and beyond!) Take your own bag or bucket and enjoy some time in the countryside picking (and sampling) the juiciest strawberries and raspberries you can find. Rumour has it the farm is experiencing one of its best seasons yet! Just don’t forget your hat and some comfy shoes.

Have lunch at Borrodell Estate

Sister’s Rock restaurant at Borrodell Estate is open from Thursday to Monday from noon, and what a place to enjoy a long and leisurely lunch. Situated at the top of the vineyard with views across the picturesque pinot noir vines, the restaurant offers a seasonal three or four-course set menu with recommended matching wines. The cuisine celebrates all there is to love about Orange, using meat from local farmers and fresh produce local producers or that has been grown on site at the Estate. You can pop into the SkyBar for wine tasting too – just make sure you remember to book!

Chase the sunset at Towac Pinnacle Lookout

Orange by name and orange by nature… At least on a clear summer’s evening! The best place to see the sun set in Orange is Pinnacle Lookout – there are 360-degree views across the countryside that impress at any time of day. After driving 12 minutes from our luxury Orange accommodation, enter the car park at Pinnacle Road and hike for about 15 minutes to reach the summit. Be sure to take your phone or a camera - the views are simply spectacular!

Take hot air balloon ride

It’s a common sight to see colourful hot air balloons drifting silently above the Belubula Valley. If you’re not afraid of an early start, it’s a great opportunity to experience the sunrise and see the remarkable landscape from a whole new perspective. Balloon Joy Flights also offer you the opportunity to assist with flight preparation and indulge in a beautiful champagne breakfast once you’ve touched down again.

Visit Orange Regional Art Gallery

Summer is a great opportunity to experience all the outdoor activities in Orange, but sometimes it’s nice to escape the heat and spend some time indoors. The Orange Regional Art Gallery is well worth a visit – it includes over 1500 permanent Australian works and a series of ever-changing exhibitions. Summer exhibitions include mixed media by Karla Dickens, portrait photography by Gary Grealy and a large scale installation, drawings and sculpture by Jaq Davies. And starting at the end of January is ‘The Arena’ – a group exhibition that platforms sport as a performance… A great way to persuade partners and friends to visit if they’re more into sport than the arts.

Christmas is on its way, we can feel the holidays fast approaching and summer events are in full swing.

There’s a fair bit going on in and around Orange this December: special shopping events, entertainment, Christmas carols, wine tours, exhibitions—you name it! If you’re not quite feeling the Christmas spirit yet—or you think you could dial it up a notch—here are our top four events we think you shouldn’t miss. You’ll be feeling very merry in no time!

Christmas Markets

What better way is there to prepare for Christmas than to embrace the spirit of giving? If you’re looking for some lovely unique gifts or something for the office secret Santa, you should definitely pay a visit to the Orange Handmade Boutique Market and Expo . Held three times a year, the December event celebrates all things Christmas. You’re likely to discover some handmade Christmas decorations and décor in addition to all the beautiful homewares, artwork, clothing, jewellery, candles and more! The market will be held on Saturday 10th to Sunday 11th December, from 10am until 4pm at the Orange Ex Services Club (231-243 Anson Street)—just a 15-minute drive from our Orange accommodation.

Comedy at Factory Espresso

There’s something about seeing a live comedy show that’s good for the soul. Everybody is up for a good belly laugh and the happy energy is truly infectious. This December, Orange is lucky enough to have Tony Martin and Geraldine Hickey putting on two live performances at Factory Espresso —Orange’s unofficial home of comedy. While you may not know the comedians by name, you’ll likely recognise Tony from ‘Thank God you’re here’, ‘Kath & Kim’ or ‘Have you been paying attention?’. Geraldine has joined Tony on ‘Have you been paying attention’ and also starred on ‘The Project’ and ‘Hughesy, we have a problem’. So gather up any friends who are free on the evening of Friday 16th or Saturday 17th of December for a night of fun and hilarity!

Sip and Paint – Christmas edition

Stockman’s Ridge winery is known for putting on great summer events. Not only are they running Live Music Saturdays throughout November and December, but on Saturday the 17th December they’re holding a ‘ Sip and Paint ’ event in honour of the festive season. Sip and paint events by ‘Pinot and Picasso’ are always great fun – an opportunity to get together with friends or family while enjoying a nice drop and putting your artistic skills to the test. On this occasion, you’ll sip on a glass of Stockman’s Ridge wine while create a hilarious ‘Sloshy the Snowman’ masterpiece. Tickets for the four-hour event are only $79 with a grazing platter included in the cost. If you’re staying with us at our Orange luxury accommodation, you’ll be pleased to know that Stockman’s Ridge is just a pleasant 15-minute drive (or taxi) away!

Blayney Twilight Shopping

The small town of Blayney is 35 minutes away from Orange and 40 minutes away from Lakeview Luxury Retreat. On one day each year, the local shops keep their doors open until 8pm to allow locals and visitors to finish all their Christmas shopping with a bit of time to spare! This year, that special day is Thursday 8th December. On the same evening, there’s a handmade market on at the Blayney Railway Station, so don’t forget to have a browse there too! Finish off your evening out of town with a meal at one of the local pubs, or stop in Millthorpe on your way back for dinner a delicious dinner at Tonic . A great way to spend a warm summer’s evening experiencing more of central New South Wales!

Orange is certainly a city of four seasons; the summers can be in the late 20s and the winters near freezing. There’s plenty to do in every season and each has its own special charm, but many holidaymakers choose to visit us in spring and autumn due to the weather. During our spring we usually have a dry spell and it’s not uncommon for temperatures to reach the early twenties. If you ask us, this makes for perfect picnic weather! We have some gorgeous picnic spots in and around our Orange luxury retreat, but if you feel like having a day out, check out Printhie Wines cellar door. Throughout the month of November, the ‘Printhie Picnic’ attracts people from near and far. You get to taste a selection of wines, choose your favourite bottle and enjoy a gourmet picnic hamper in the setting of your choice among the vines. Springtime bliss!

Stroll around the blossoming gardens

The Orange Botanic Gardens are a sight for sore eyes. Open from 7am daily, the gardens are a beautiful spot to enjoy a morning coffee, a leisurely walk, a scenic run or a steady cycle. Make your way through the 17-hectare property, exploring the Sensory Garden, Weeping Elm Lawn, Viburnum Garden and the Winter Garden. Keep an eye out for your favourite flowers and watch the different bird species frolic and forage in the lush grounds. As well as being home to the region’s most vibrant and diverse display of flora and fauna, the Orange Botanic Gardens also contain a fascinating outdoor sculpture garden. Discover a collection of works by some of Australia’s best-known sculptors, including two past winners of the annual Sculpture by the Sea contest. The Orange Botanic Gardens is on the northern side of Orange and just a 15-minute drive from our luxury accommodation.

Summer Kitchen at Oriana Gardens

The Oriana in Orange is one of the most picturesque spring settings around. With a restaurant, pool, and cocktail bars surrounded by bright blossoming gardens, this is one of the most popular venues in Orange to visit as the weather starts to warm. From September until April, Oriana opens its ‘Summer Kitchen’ in the garden. This means authentic Neapolitan woodfired pizza, delicious summer specials and refreshing cocktails under the shelter of cabanas and shady trees. You can even have a refreshing dip when you’re done—the pool is open to diners who spend a certain amount on food and beverages. Oriana offers luxury urban accommodation too – but of course nothing compares to the seclusion and tranquillity at Lakeview Luxury Retreat.

Bonfire evenings at Stockman’s Ridge

Another awesome Orange venue and another fun event to get you out and about this Spring. Available in the weekends, the ‘Book a Bonfire’ offering at Stockman's Ridge runs until the end of November. For $50, you can reserve a private firepit and seating area for your group of up to ten in the beautiful rural vineyard. BBQs are available at some of the spaces and you can bring your own food to cook and consume at your leisure. Or if a BBQ isn’t essential, book the Wine Barrel or Gazebo Firepit and order a delicious tasting player to accompany one of Stockman Ridge’s premium cool-climate wines. ‘Book a Bonfire sessions are available for 3hr 45 minute sessions, either at midday or 4.15pm. Make sure you book early to secure the bonfire of your choice!

Whether or not you’re a wine afficionado, you must pay a visit to at least one of the cellar doors in Orange. Have a taste-test, learn about winemaking and buy a bottle if you desire—or simply enjoy the scenery and offerings at one of Australia’s top cool-climate wine regions.

Borrodell Estate

Open from Thursday to Monday, Borrodell Estate is one of the most popular cellar doors in Orange. Perched above the vast countryside on Mount Canobolas, the vineyard produces magnificent cool climate wines like chardonnay and pinot noir. Tastings take place at the SkyBar, the aptly-named cellar door which, at 1030m above sea level, is one of Australia’s highest. Wine tastings can be arranged between the hours for 11am and 3pm for groups of up to six, and guests can select either six set wines for $20 or three wines of their choice for $12. And if the wine is going down a treat, try your luck at getting a table at Borrodell’s Sister’s Rock restaurant. Situated at the peak of the vineyard with views over the pinot noir block, Sister’s Rock is commonly listed as one of the best restaurants in Orange. And the best part is Borrodell is located just across the lake and only a ten-minute drive from our luxury Orange accommodation.

Heifer Station Wines

Heifer Station Wines is the perfect venue if you’re looking for a relaxed, family-friendly cellar door in Orange. Once one of Orange’s biggest cattle stations, the property is still home to a number of cattle which graze peacefully among the vineyard and a herd of friendly alpacas. Children will love meeting the animals at the ‘Funny Farm’ petting zoo—which is conveniently located just next to a wine tasting room in an old woolshed. Kids will meet hens, goats and even Tilly the Shetland pony, while you sample their champion Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. At this cellar door, you’ll learn plenty about cool climate wines and get a real feeling for what it could be like to live out there on the land. You’ll need to book for your wine-tasting, but there’s something for every customer ranging from $15 for a 50-minute tasting to $315pp heli-tour and picnic experience.

Philip Shaw Wines

Philip Shaw’s ‘Koomooloo’ vineyard features a beautiful bluestone barn and immaculately landscaped gardens—a lovely spot to take a stroll on a warm, clear day. The best Philip Shaw wines are said to be found within its ‘numbers’ collection; four memorable or award-winning wines including a 2017 cabernet sauvignon and a 2021 pinot noir—all of which can be purchased at the cellar door. If you’d like to try before you buy, book in for a wine-tasting session. For $25 you can try a selection of wines along with a grazing plate, or book a wine-tasting only, without the food, for just $15. Philip Shaw doesn’t serve food but the cellar door is open seven days a week from 11am until 5pm. Also ideally situated, the Koomooloo vineyard is just a 10-minute drive from our Orange accommodation.

Ferment

If you’re short on time or just keen to sample wines from as many different local vineyards as possible, book yourself in for a wine-tasting session at Ferment – the Orange Wine Centre . This little gem is located on Hill Street in central Orange and offers wines from a whopping 19 different cellar doors in the region. The signature, curated and hoosegg tasting experiences consist of six tastes per person—or you can simply book a table and purchase wine by the glass or bottle of your choice. What better way to taste the quality and diversity of wines that can only be found here in Orange?

Any good holiday should involve a sprinkling of indulgence, and what better way to indulge than by trying out some of the best restaurants in Orange?! We’re known for our premium produce, and it doesn’t get much fresher than enjoying fresh food mere minutes away from where it was grown. And while some of Orange’s best eateries are fine dining restaurants, there are equally incredible casual dining options too. So whether you’re seeking a hearty breakfast, a long lunch in the sun or a sensational seven course meal, Orange has an eatery for every occasion.

Charred Kitchen and Bar

Orange might not immediately pop to mind when you think of fine dining, but the Australia’s best restaurants aren’t just limited to its capital cities. Charred Kitchen and Bar is the perfect example of this. Located just off Bathurst Road, Charred Kitchen and Bar is in a convenient location, easily accessible for most people who have accommodation in Orange. The menu showcases the local produce in the best possible way, cooked in a wood-fired oven for that deliciously distinctive charred flavour. The seven-course tasting menu is a big hit with locals and visitors, with wine matchings available too. A meal at Charred Kitchen and Bar is one you will never forget!

Birdie Noshery and Drinking

Birdie Noshery is a great spot for a meal at any time of day, but if we were to pick one meal to have here it would have to be breakfast. There is a selection of mouth-watering pastries and sweet treats, and all your trusty savoury favourites on the menu as well – with plenty of options for vegetarians. Our recommendation? The sweet corn, polenta, parmesan and zucchini fritters with avocado, roasted tomato, aioli, shaved fennel and rocket salad. The all-day offerings are just as delicious, designed to be shared with friends over a nice glass of wine or a steaming pot of tea. Perch up at the big brass bar and enjoy friendly service with a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

Sister’s Rock

It would be remiss of us not to include a winery on our list of the best restaurants in Orange, and Sister’s Rock Restaurant gets our vote. Located at Borrodell Estate, just across the lake from our Orange luxury accommodation, Sister’s Rock restaurant is the epitome of an eatery with a view. Sit out on the deck and enjoy a sumptuous meal while overlooking the scenic pinot noir block and the picturesque Towac Valley. Sister’s Rock offers three-course or four-course long lunches from Thursday to Sunday and is in hot demand, so be sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Sweet Sour Salt

Many of Orange’s best restaurants specialise in modern European fare, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other cuisines to be found! Sweet Sour Salt is arguably Orange’s best Asian restaurant, influenced by flavours and dishes from a range of different countries and regions. There are noodle dishes, curries, wontons and more. And while the menu is relatively small, everything they do here is done well. Sweet Sour Salt is located just off the main street, so it’s a nice walk if you’re staying in town or about a ten-minute drive from our luxury accommodation in Orange.

Lolli Redini

Some might say we saved the best until last, and Lolli Redini is undoubtedly one of the best restaurants in Orange. Established in 2001, the accolades speak for themselves; Lolli Redini has been awarded an impressive 17 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Awards, one Chefs Hat rating and one wine glass rating. And if you fancy yourself a bit of a foodie, Lolli is the place to go. The menu features mouth-watering dishes like local venison crusted in juniper and pepper and slow cooked, twice cooked local beef brisket. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to good restaurants in Orange, but a special meal at Lolli Redini is certainly a must-do!

Autumn is our favourite season here in Orange - with the crisp mornings and leaves changing to red and golden hues, there is no shortage of things to love. With this in mind, we have put together a list of some upcoming events you won't want to miss!

Orange Chamber Music Festival (28 April – 1 May)

The Annual Orange Chamber Music Festival is something many Orange locals look forward to and visitors come for in droves. The four-day event features performances by a huge range of ensembles, hosted at some of the region’s best music venues. Chamber music aficionados will recognise some of the bigger acts on the list, including the Streeton Trio, and those just wanting to dip their toes in the water should take a look at ‘Cultured’ - a full day of free activities open to the community within the Orange Cultural Precinct. Single tickets are available for specific performances while gold and platinum passes are a great option for those who want all-inclusive access to everything the festival has to offer.

Eco-Tour Orange (4 Feb – 10 July)

These e-bike adventures are now available year-round but we happen to think that the cooler months of April and May are the best times to ride! Jump on an electric bike and take a fun, five-hour tour around the Orange region, checking out the colours, sights and sound of Orange in Autumn. Putting even more ‘eco’ into ‘eco-tour’, you’ll make a special stop at Gosling Creek Reserve, a reclaimed pine plantation, where you can gaze out over the thriving wetlands and marvel at the fascinating wildlife. You’ll also visit Lake Canobolas, which is right next to our luxury Orange accommodation, and enjoy a complimentary coffee at the lakeside.

Live Music Saturdays (9 April – 28 May)

Live Music Saturdays kicked off on the 9th of April and run right through to the end of May. Book a spot at Stockman’s Ridge Wines, just 15-minutes from our Orange luxury accommodation, and see some great live acts for only $5 per person. Add a grazing platter to your booking and bring along the kids and dog for a fun family afternoon out! Numbers are limited, so book early to confirm your Saturday session among the vines.

Millamolong Polo Country Classic Tournament (23-24 April)

If you’ve never been to the polo, you couldn’t ask for a better introduction than the Millamolong Polo Country Classic Tournament . The popular annual event is a great alternative to the races if you love horses and long days out with friends. The action-packed tournament features multiple games over the two days and while general admission is only $10, there is also the option to book a field-side tent with a table and chairs to give you front-row seats to all the action! Millamolong Country Club is in the town of Mandurama, around a 50-minute drive from our luxury Orange accommodation - so we recommend organising transport in advance.

Alice in Wonderland (6-15 May)

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday over two weekends in May, Orange Theatre Company presents a musical take on this family favourite . See all your favourite characters, from the white rabbit to the Cheshire cat, as they dance, sing and laugh their way across the stage at the Orange Civic Theatre. With both 1pm and 7.30pm showings on Saturdays, make this event either a fun family occasion or a great excuse for a night out with friends.

Liam Benson: Hello, good to meet you (14 May-24 July)

Our final event on this list is one for those who appreciate a unique art exhibition. Liam Benson is a multi-disciplinary artist who examines culture, sub-culture and identity, and this exhibition focuses specifically on the way that horses interact. The colourful and highly sensory experience combines sculpture, video and wearables and is on show at the Orange Regional Gallery from 14 May.

Picnics are simple, romantic, inexpensive and a great excuse to spend some time in the outdoors spending quality time with the person you love. If you’re in Orange, you’re lucky enough to have dozens of perfect picnic spots at your disposal. So pack up all your favourite treats and roll up your rug! Here’s our exclusive list of the top five perfect picnic spots in Orange!

Lake Canobolas

Shady trees, native birds and a beautiful lake to sit beside… What more could you possibly want in a picnic spot? Lake Canobolas is a winning place to kick back with a picnic on a warm day, and it’s right in the backyard of our Orange accommodation. You can work up an appetite beforehand with a walk or a jog around the scenic lake; or simply sit and watch others as they fish, swim and enjoy the fresh lakeside air. And if you forget your picnic supplies, you can always grab some snacks and drinks from the handy Lakeside Kiosk and Café. There are barbecues on site for you to enjoy too – just make sure you get in early over the weekends and holidays.

Borenore Picnic Area

There’s a large grassy area at Borenore Karst Conservation Reserve that’s perfect for a picnic - with tables, barbecues and plenty of space to spread out. Borenore Karst Conservation Reserve is only 20 minutes from our Orange accommodation and it’s well worth a visit, with tranquil walking tracks and ancient caves to discover. If you have children with you, they’ll love exploring the caves with a torch before playing on the grassy reserve then tucking into a delicious picnic feast.

Orange View Picnic Area and Lookout

Just a ten-minute drive from our luxury Orange accommodation is the Orange View Picnic Area and Lookout – a small but picturesque spot situated part way up Mount Canobolas. As the name suggests, this spot offers incredible views over the city of Orange and its surrounds. There are colourful endangered birds to be spotted and wildflowers all around in Spring. Before or after your picnic, you can stretch your legs on of the nearby walking tracks, or even make your way right up to the Mount Canobolas summit.

Heifer Station Wines

If you’re looking for something a little bit special, a private picnic at Heifer Station Wines could be just the ticket. The Best Walks Around Orange

There’s nothing quite like a good walk and Orange has plenty of them!

There’s nothing quite like a good walk - whether it’s for fitness, relaxation or to explore new and different parts of the world. Our luxury accommodation in Orange is perfectly situated near mountains, lakes, waterfalls, gardens and heritage areas, offering some of the best walks around Orange. Whether you’re a power walker or more of an ambler, there’s a walk nearby for you.

Borenore Karst Conservation Reserve

Located 17 kilometres north-west of Orange, Borenore Karst conservation reserve offers two great walks that you can navigate solo, with a friend or even with little ones in tow. And for many it’s not the walks here that are the highlight, but the ancient karst limestone caves you’ll find scattered throughout the reserve. At just 700m, the walk to arch cave is the easiest for little ones. Or if you’re looking for something longer, set your sights on the 7km return walk to Verandah Cave. You’ll pass Tunnel Cave along the way – just be careful if you choose to explore this one as it’s not suitable for beginners or children. The walks here are flat, peaceful and a great option if you like to combine your exercise with a bit of adventure.

Pinnacle Lookout

We’ve mentioned Pinnacle Lookout a few times before in our blogs, but that’s because it really is one of the best walks around Orange to experience jaw-dropping views. Situated south-west of Orange, the drive here from our luxury accommodation will only take you ten minutes. The walk from the car park up to Pinnacle Lookout can be done in about 15 minutes, keeping in mind that it gets steep in some parts. The views from the top are best experienced at sunrise or sunset but as long as it’s a clear day, the walk up here is worth it at any hour. This one is great if you’re in a hurry or you simply like to be rewarded at the end of your walk.

Cook Park Heritage Walk

Cook Park is located in the middle of town, making it one of the best walks around Orange if you also want to squeeze in a coffee or a bite to eat nearby. You can make your own way around the Park, enjoying the beautiful gardens and brisk fresh air. The gardens change depending on the season: in spring you’ll see colourful tulips and daffodils, in summer you’ll see (and smell!) the roses, and from February until April you’ll see an impressive display of Tuberous Begonias in the Blowes Conservatory. You can also explore the original caretaker’s cottage, which dates back some 150 years to when the park was established. The cottage is now home to the popular Park Guildry – a fantastic little store full of local handcrafted goods, produce and crafts.

Historic Water Race Walking Track / Mullion Creek Waterfall

About 20 minutes’ drive north of Orange is Mullion Range State Conservation Area , another expansive natural wonder ready for you to explore. The Historic Water Race Walking Track is described by trailhiking.com.au as a ‘living legacy of Australia’s early and intriguing gold mining history.’ The 2.7 kilometre walk will take you around an hour and a half to navigate, and along the way you’ll see how water was directed into mining areas from a nearby Creek. There are plenty of birds to be seen in area and opportunities for swimming too! Mullion Creek Waterfall (or ‘The Falls, as it is affectionately known) is a great place for fishing and cooling off when it’s warm.

Lake Canobolas Reserve

The centrepiece of Lake Canobolas Reserve is a tranquil blue lake where many birds and wildlife gather. The walking track around the lake makes for a blissful stroll and with one lap of the lake around 2.5 kilometres long, it’s a great spot to get in your morning exercise. Popular with holidaymakers and families too, the reserve is a great place for a picnic or to catch up with friends. You can go fishing, take a dip or just sit and watch the wildlife and people go by… A great place to spend a couple of hours and just a 10-minute drive from our luxury Orange accommodation.

The Celebrate Orange360 Festival is set to celebrate the ‘re-opening’ of our region with an incredible, three-day program of events! From the 9th-12th December, the Spiegeltent in Robertson Park (just a 15-minute drive from our luxury Orange accommodation) will host a series of entertaining ticketed shows, from ‘ Kiss Bang Kabaret ’ to ‘ The Pitts Family Circus ’ to the sword-swallowing ‘ Space Cowboy ’! There is no shortage of entertainment at the Spiegeltent – just be sure to book your tickets now because some events are selling out fast!

Artisan and Christmas Markets

Saturday 12th December is unofficial ‘markets‘ day in Orange! Snag yourself a $5 ticket to the Sparkling Brunch and Artisan Market at Robertson Park, where you can check out local produce and gifts galore just in time for Christmas. Or head on down to the Rotary Club of Orange Christmas Market at the Orange Showgrounds instead! From 9am until 2pm there will be around 90 stalls selling plants, toys, food, produce, jewellery, crafts and much, much more! If you’re yet to finish your Christmas shopping, our Orange markets are definitely the place to go.

Cherry-picking at an Orange orchard

Is there a more idyllic way to spend a summer’s day than picking your own fresh cherries? We think not! Pinnacle Lookout

This walk is perfect for those who want a bit of fresh air, exercise and some gorgeous scenery—but don’t have hours on end to spare! From Lakeview Luxury Retreat, the carpark for the Pinnacle Lookout is just a ten-minute drive away and it’s one of the best spots in Orange to watch the sunrise or sunset. After around a 15-minute climb up a fair few stairs, you’re rewarded with spectacular 270-degree views across the Towac Valley and the city of Orange.

Botanic Gardens

Orange Botanic Gardens is 17 hectares of lush and vibrant plant life – the ideal place to spend a long afternoon in the springtime. Situated on the northern side of the city, the Botanic Gardens are just a 15-minute drive from our luxury accommodation in Orange. There are several areas to explore: the Sensory Garden, Weeping Elm Lawn, Viburnum Garden and the Winter Garden. Native trees, exotic species, colourful roses and a serene billabong can all be found among the gardens, and there are some spectacular sculptures to admire as you wander around the grounds. The Orange Botanic Gardens is another idyllic destination for a picnic with a view.

Mount Canobolas

If you’re a fan of bird watching, natural beauty and tranquility, Mount Canobolas is the place for you. Stretching 1395 metres above sea level, Mount Canobolas is an iconic natural attraction in the Orange region. The Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area actually offers a selection of trails ranging from 15-minute walks to two-hour hikes. See the glorious Federal Falls, explore the ancient Arch Cave or take in the scenic views from the Summits walking track which connects two of the mountain’s highest points. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a grey currawong – a mysterious native bird which is believed to be in decline. Take a picnic lunch if you’ve got time to spare – there are plenty of picnic tables and bench seats within the conservation area and some BBQ facilities too.

From a Hot Air Balloon

Hot air balloons are often seen drifting over the countryside on a clear, still day. The view from an Orange hot air balloon lets you see the landscape in a whole new light, providing a birds-eye view of the rolling hills, and the many picturesque vineyards and orchards that are scattered across the region. Best experienced at dawn, you’ll witness the landscape come to life from high above. You might even spot our Orange luxury accommodation far down below! Sorry, but you have to visit us here in Orange to sample the wines at Borrodell Estate. Sitting at an altitude of over 1000 metres above sea level, Borrodell is one of Australia’s highest vineyards. And not only do you get a magnificent view from Mount Canobolas, but you get to try the incredible wines while you’re here. Borrodells cellar door offers Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and more. Philip Shaw Wines

Philip Shaw is definitely one of our most famous Orange wineries. Their Pinot Noir is consistently applauded, with its 2019 No. 8 winning the Australia Post Trophy for Best Pinot Noir in the 2020 NSW Wine Awards. Orange Winter Fire Festival

Even if you’re not somebody who enjoys the colder weather, there’s something special about being rugged up in your warm clothes enjoying the comfort and ambience of a warm open fire. The Orange Winter Fire Festival heats up our region this August by celebrating all the things we love about the winter months in country New South Wales! There’s always an amazing lineup of restaurants and venues that get involved and while this year’s program is still coming together, you’re sure to find plenty of unique, hearty and mouth-watering meals seared, scorched, grilled and toasted to perfection. There will be bonfires and country cookouts as well as more cosy indoor affairs. The Orange Winter Fire Festival runs from the 6th to the 8th of August.

Long weekend comedy special

If you don’t know Lehmo by name, you might recognise his face from Channel 10’s The Project or popular American drama Utopia. The well-known comedian comes to Orange this June with fellow funny-man Steve Philp, where they hit Factory Espresso for two consecutive nights of uproarious fun and laughter. If you haven’t seen a live comedy show before, make this one your first! We can’t predict what the guys will talk about but it’s safe to expect there will be plenty of giggles and you’re bound to depart with a smile on your face. Emerge – Australian romantic and classical orchestra

This is one of the best things to do in Orange in winter for the classical music fans among us! The Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra comes to the Orange Regional Conservatorium in August with the final performance in their three-part 2021 series. The ‘Emerge’ concert showcases the second half of the 18th century when techniques changed and classical music composition began to evolve. Listen to famous works by musicians of the Mannheim Court including Haydn and Mozart and hear some of Australia’s up and coming young performers. The two-hour concert begins at 7.00pm on Saturday 7 August.

Newbridge winter solstice festival

Less than an hour from our Orange accommodation is the village of Newbridge, home to just 100 or so permanent residents. The Winter Solstice Festival is the biggest annual event in Newbridge and people come from far and wide to enjoy the annual medieval-style celebration. There’s professional sword fighting, viking shows, costume contests, dancing, music, games, markets, magic, food and fun for the whole family. The winter festival marks the shortest day of the year and kicks off with a community bonfire at the Newbridge Hotel.

We’re lucky enough to have some of the country’s most diverse and delicious produce homegrown in our abundant region. We’ve got it all: fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, smallgoods, meat, jam, bread, honey, wine and more! Orange F.O.O.D Week became the first food and wine event in Australia or New Zealand to become certified as a sustainable event. Waltz into Orange this February for Australia’s best poetry festival.

Banjo Paterson is an Australian icon. If you don’t know him by name, you’ll definitely have heard of his most famous creation, the catchy Aussie tune that is ‘Waltzing Matilda’. But Andrew Barton (“Banjo”) Paterson was far from a one-hit wonder. The bush poet was renowned for his captivating poetry about everyday life in rural Australia, quickly becoming one of the Central Tablelands’ most famous writers.

Since 2014, an annual australian poetry festival has been held as a tribute to Banjo and his life’s work. This February, the eighth Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival comes to Orange NSW, bringing with it a series of events for locals and visitors alike.

From the 13th until the 21st of February, Orange and its surrounding towns will transform into a poetry paradise. Think poetry recitals, dinners, school performances, professional entertainers, markets and more. All all this can be found within easy driving distance of Lakeview Luxury Retreat.

The poetry festival program

The opening weekend of the festival kicks off on Saturday 13th with a Banjo Paterson poetry tribute in the gardens of Rosebank Guest House. Local performers will bring his iconic ballads to life among the picturesque gardens of the historical Millthorpe property. Concurrently, an afternoon tea will be held at Boree Cabonne Homestead where guests will experience entertainment, history and a special tour of the landmark property. In the evening, an open poetry contest will be held at Freemasons Hotel in Molong, where prize money is up for grabs for the best one-minute performance. Sunday offers another opportunity for the public to show off their skills during an open-mic event at the Banjo – More Than A Poet Museum at Yeoval.

On Wednesday, one of the highlights of the festival will see a permanent tribute to Banjo unveiled in the Museum in Yeoval. Banjo spent the first seven years of his childhood in the town of Yeoval and a three-metre bronze sculpture will be erected in his honour. That evening, Banjo’s birthday will be celebrated at the Banjo Paterson Park in Orange through music, poetry and stories about Narrambla Vale—where Banjo was born in 1864.

The Barrel Shed at Heifer Station Wines is the venue for the main event on Thursday, where another open-mic event can be enjoyed along with a glass of beer or wine and a hearty shearer’s meal. Youth performances abound on Friday and Saturday mornings—an important focus in 2021 as festival organisers aim to encourage more young people to appreciate the art of bush poetry.

The 2021 Banjo Paterson Poetry Festival concludes on Sunday 21st February with a Rotary Community Market Day at Orange’s showground arena. The markets will offer craft, produce and entertainment, and another open-mic event to bring the festival to a memorable close.

In September 2016, Lakeview luxury couples retreat welcomed a very special foursome. After a journey of around 6 hours the group arrived to great fanfare. We welcomed them with refreshments and admired their impressive coats. The ladies were not as famous as their human counterparts, but for Highland Cattle, the group certainly had plenty of charisma, fabulous looks and an undeniable presence.

Our guests often ask us about our little herd of Highland Cattle: their names, how old they are and their relationships to one another. They’re one of our favourite topics of conversation and we’re proud of our shaggy friends, so we thought we would take a moment to share with you their story so far.

Trevor had always wanted to own and develop his own herd of cattle but the responsibility of managing 30 acres of land while developing our Orange luxury retreat left little time for much else. So, when the opportunity arose to develop a small herd of Highland Cattle and add something unique to the property, we needed very little convincing.

After a few weeks at the luxury retreat, located just 15 minutes out of Orange, the cattle were happy, settled and thoroughly enjoying their new home. Highland Cattle are known for being tame and good-natured, so they love nothing better than their daily interactions with the staff and guests at our luxury accommodation.

After a few weeks we discovered that Hamish was a girl, so he was quickly renamed Alice. Meanwhile Alice’s mother Zsa Zsa got to know the neighbouring Angus Bull and after jumping the fence, she quickly fell pregnant. Unfortunately, Zsa Zsa’s calf was too large to deliver—but it did offer some insight as to why Alice herself was a half Highland Cattle and half another unknown breed! Not long after that, a smaller Angus Bull arrived, and cheeky Zsa Zsa jumped the fence once again. This resulted in young Maisy’s safe arrival in February 2019—the first of Lakeview’s home-bred calves.

In October 2018, we also welcomed a young, scrawny yet lively pure-bred Highland Bull named Houston. After putting the cattle in with Houston in over the spring and summer, Alice was the only one who fell pregnant. Agatha was born in September 2019, and the following year Zsa Zsa and Alice both fell pregnant, delivering Hestia and Calypso. Because Houston has only produced female offspring so far, he has been fondly nicknamed ‘Henry the Eighth’.

A holiday highlight for Lakeview guests

Our herd of Highland Cattle has added a special touch to Lakeview Retreat in ways that we had never imagined. They’re not very commonly seen in Australia—with only around 2000 registered with the Australian Highland Cattle Society—so their presence helps to add to the sense of being transported somewhere far away, truly escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Our guests love to take and share pictures of the photogenic herd, and we love to be tagged so that we too can enjoy them.

The herd also has a calm presence, working in harmony with the seclusion and peaceful surrounds of the retreat. No matter the season or the colours of the landscape, the Cattle always seem to look at home. Just as we love seeing our herd grow and develop, so do our guests. Many return eager to learn whether we’ve welcomed any new additions and to see how their favourites are faring. Highland Cattle are renowned for being great mothers and we’ve seen that here firsthand. The cows are currently in with Houston again (who has grown into a fabulous specimen of a bull) and we can’t wait to see what happens from here.
